Filmas “Jelgavaʼ94” stāsta centrā ir četrpadsmitgadīgais Jānis, Jelgavas puika ar “zubra” līmeņa mācību sasniegumiem, kurš cenšas būt neviena nepamanīts. Tomēr iemīlēšanās klasesbiedrenē Kristīnē un nejauši iegūtie draugi Nāve un Zombis neatgriezami aizsāk jaunu lappusi Jelgavas pusaudža dzīvē – ir jāspēlē grupā, jāklausās metāls, vajadzīgas īstās drēbes un galu galā līdz asarām jānoved skolotāji un vecāki. Tas ir laiks, par kuru pieaugot, ļoti iespējams, būs kauns, bet tikpat iespējams, ka tas izrādīsies pats labākais dzīves periods. Filmas stāsts risinās uz 1994.gada notikumu fona, gluži kā tas ir arī tāda paša nosaukuma Jāņa Joņeva grāmatā, kas ir filmas pamatā – cietumnieku izbēgšana Jelgavā, mūzikas ierakstu nelegālais tirgus, Kurta Kobeina nāve.

Where did the counterculture go? Which ideas from previous century countercultures are sustainable in today's world? Kino Augusts and Kaņepes Kultūras centrs offers a program of historical counterculture portrayal in cinema and music, introducing the role of metal, hippies and punks in the dissolution of the Soviet Union and creation of new public identity.

The story is based on the best seller by Jānis Joņevs set in 1994 in the Latvian city of Jelgava. The film takes us deep inside the world of teenagers of that time: combining the intimate diary of a teenager Jānis trying to find himself by joining a subculture, as well as a skillful, detailed and almost documentary-like depiction of the beginnings of the second independence of Latvia. “Jelgava ʼ94” is a portrait of a generation in the 1990s who are searching for their own identity and are fans of alternative culture. This is a touching story about us as youngsters when everybody is against the whole world and tries not to become “one of them”. But can one keep the promise?
