On May 15, the jazz club MASA will host a tribute to the Sophisticated Giant — Dexter Gordon.
A legendary jazz tenor saxophonist and composer, one of the most influential musicians of early bebop and hard bop, whose playing also influenced John Coltrane. He is considered one of the most melodic saxophonists of all time, in whose performance the narrative always comes to the fore. His sound was characterized by a massive, low and hypnotic tone, as well as the special way he introduced the compositions with his deep voice. In addition, he was nominated for an Oscar for his leading role in the film Round Midnight.
The Ester Kristiāna Ozoliņa Quartet will perform both Dexter Gordon’s original compositions and jazz standards in various arrangements.
Line-up:
Estere Kristiāna Ozoliņa – tenor and soprano saxophones
Agnese Muste – piano
Nils Valkiainen – bass
Dāvis Ludvigs Bikšus – drums
