What is behind the famous painting "Black Square", painted in 1915 by the extravagant artist Kazimir Malevich? For his rivals, it is a challenge, for the Soviet authorities, a secret code, for women, a love letter, and for the Ukrainian people, a tragic prediction of the future..."
Who is Kazimir Malevich? Born and raised in Ukraine, the young and ambitious artist moves to Moscow in search of creative opportunities. Malevich dreams of going to Paris and meeting Pablo Picasso. Trying to create his own style of painting, the artist paints his most mysterious painting, "Black Square," and presents it at the "0.10" exhibition in St. Petersburg. This event becomes decisive in the life of Malevich, who continues to create art even despite threats and persecution by the NKVD. The artist is not afraid of controversial topics, in particular, reflecting the terrible "Holodomor" in his works. Having received permission for a long-awaited trip abroad, Kazimir Malevich's plans are destroyed, because one of the NKVD agents gets the opportunity to accuse the artist of espionage... Tape "Malevich" was directed by Darya Onyshchenko and shot according to her script together with Anna Palenchuk. Filming began before the full-scale invasion, but filming was completed during the war. The main locations were Kyiv and the region. Most of the locations considered for filming in the Kharkiv region turned out to be destroyed during the war.
