This November, the artists’ association Baltic Analog Lab celebrates its 10th anniversary. To mark the occasion, we invite you to a special event on 17 November at 18:00 at the Riga Circus Arena, featuring four audiovisual performances on a 360° screen, with projections by BAL members alongside local and international guest artists and musicians. Special guests include the emerging jazz trio Eklektika, the musical collective Bērnurīts, and two international artists – experimental filmmaker Nan Wang, who will present a new expanded cinema work, and Indonesian musician Mo’ong, who will take part in BAL member’s Ieva’s Balode’s new performance “Capacity for Resonance”.
To celebrate this milestone, we invite audiences to experience a unique circular projection screen, with projectionists and musicians performing inside it, while the audience will be able to watch the performances from outside the screen as well as from the arena’s balcony.
The evening will begin with BAL member Andris Fedotovs’ performance “Cyanotypic Multiverse”, in which the artist uses several 35mm slide projectors equipped with handmade external shutters that operate in synchronisation with his own sound compositions and slides created using the historical cyanotype technique.
In the second performance, “The Capacity for Resonance”, Ieva Balode, together with the musical collective Bērnurīts (Maksims Šenteļevs, Jēkabs Nīmanis) and special guest Indonesian musician Mo’ong, will invite audiences to experience a magical ritual of fire, sound and projection. The musicians will play handmade instruments, accompanying 16mm film loops featuring footage of a fire ritual in Latvia and shamanic traditions in Indonesia.
The third performance will be presented by Netherlands-based Chinese artist Nan Wang, who will premiere her new work “Circling Traces of Light”. In this performance, the artist brings together projected liquid images, polarization optics, handmade 16mm film projectors and rotating projection systems. As the performance unfolds, projectors move through the space, and the artist’s own body becomes part of the projection apparatus, creating an ever-shifting relationship between image, movement, light and the surrounding 360° environment.
The evening will conclude with a performance by the emerging contemporary jazz group Eklektika, an instrumental trio from Riga. The group consists of drummer Kārlis Roberts Kalējs, saxophonist Rūdolfs Pēteris Rubenis and clarinetist Artūrs Bariss. Their unconventional instrumentation gives the group a distinctive sound, blending multiple genres and a variety of sonic effects, accompanied by analogue projections created by BAL members.
