At the age of 60, the career of former actress Anna has fizzled out. Always elegantly dressed, she lives in a lonely apartment in West Berlin, earns a living as a speech teacher and openly shares secrets with her neighbour Michelle. One evening, the actress is robbed by a young man, and soon the same boy is attending her speech lessons. Anna starts with vowels, reminding her that "consonants take your breath away". Unexpectedly, Adrian becomes the first and only letter of the alphabet, and the love that is born makes her abandon the norms of language as well as other rules.
