Tide

Latvia I 2009
Documentary I 80’
Valdis and his snail collectors are some of the many Latvians in exile that will be remembered in Latvian history and whose story will evoke similar feelings as memories of Soviet times and Ulmanlaiki do. This time it is Ireland - with its own magic and uniqueness, and this time, scars will be left in the family trees of Latvian’s just the same.
The collection of snails is defined by the TIDE. When the sea recedes, they collect, but when it approaches, they sleep. The sea of Ireland is four times saltier that the Baltic sea and life in this place is often significantly “saltier” than back home. Everyone’s nerves are exposed, for some they are a bit “raw” and for others - a bit tarnished from the salt.
2ANNAS “Latvian Wanderers” programme includes two feature films that were made within 20 years of one another and that show two completely different perspectives on Latvian migration history. In each of their own undeniably artistic ways and despite being made 20 years apart, both talk about “Latvian wanderers,” perhaps the most relevant subject of discussion in Latvian society both then and now.
